from 35.00

Featured instructor: Connie Ryan leads the statewide Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, where she has been the Executive Director since 2002. She is a well-known voice in Iowa’s public square, protecting faith and freedom in Iowa and challenging progressive people of faith and goodwill to actively shape the state’s public debate on issues of religious freedom, equality, civility, and justice. Connie is frequently sought out by Iowa’s media and community groups to create dialogue and address issues at the intersection of faith and politics.

Course Description: Prayer in school. War on Religion. Students gathering at the flagpole. Parents’ rights and parental choice. Banning books. Church music in public school concerts. Evolution vs. creationism.

All are subjects bantered about in relationship to public schools and religious freedom. Do the religious freedom rights of a student or family trump the rights of other students? What is the role of the school, administrator or teacher when a student’s religious freedom comes into question? What is valid or not? Is a teacher protected by his or her religious freedom in teaching or refusing to teach a subject matter?

The course will help to define religious freedom and its intersection with public education in a variety of situations.  The course will offer resources for teachers to understand the legal and ethical parameters around religious freedom and public education.  Additionally, the course will provide tools to use in the classroom to encourage positive conversation on religious freedom, its history and meaning in the United States.
